Our first family trip to Gatlinburg, TN!

I never realized how easy traveling with kids could be until I stepped out of my comfort zone.

Before I had my two daughters, traveling was simple. I could book a last-minute flight, pack one bag, and head wherever I wanted. Life was flexible, spontaneous, and low-stress.

Then my first daughter was born in 2022, and everything changed. Being a first-time mom brought a new kind of anxiety and mental load that I carried every day. It was hard enough to remember simple tasks, like moving laundry from the washer to the dryer, so the thought of traveling with a baby felt nearly impossible.

But as the months passed, I realized something: each stage of my daughter’s life was fleeting. If I didn’t take the leap and plan a trip soon, I would miss out on these moments with this version of her.

Taking the Leap

So, I did it. I took on the task of planning our first family vacation. And that’s when the questions started flooding in:

  • Where should we go?

  • How long of a drive or flight is too much?

  • How do you actually fly with a baby?

  • What do we need to pack?

  • What activities will work for everyone?

It was overwhelming, but I learned that with a little planning, flexibility, and patience, family travel is possible and even more magical. The key is knowing that you don’t have to figure everything out perfectly. Small steps, realistic expectations, and a little preparation go a long way toward making your first trip with kids feel achievable.

Start Small and Build Confidence

The first thing I realized is that starting small makes a big difference. A short weekend getaway or a brief flight can help you test the waters, learn your family’s rhythm, and build confidence for longer trips. Our first trip was a relaxing weekend in Gatlinburg, TN which consisted of a one hour time change and 5-hour drive. The point is, you don’t have to jump straight into a week-long vacation across the country. Start with what feels doable for your family.

Plan, But Try Not To Stress

Planning became my secret weapon. With little ones, having a checklist of essentials (diapers, snacks, favorite toys) and mapping out meals and naps around travel times took a huge weight off my shoulders. I also learned to leave room for flexibility, because, no matter how much you plan, things rarely go the way you think.

Ask For Help for Traveling with Kids

Travel doesn’t have to be a solo effort. Whether it’s a partner, family member, or a trusted travel advisor, asking for support can make a world of difference. We went on our first trip with family, which gave me a peace of mind. Having others for support meant I could focus on the moments that mattered most.

Focus on Memories, Not Perfection

Even with careful planning, things will go wrong—flights get delayed, schedules change, and naps may be skipped. But those imperfect moments often become the stories you tell for years. Instead of stressing over every detail, I learned to embrace the surprises and savor the laughter, wonder, and connection that family travel brings.

Take the Leap

Traveling with kids may feel intimidating at first, but it is absolutely possible (and deeply rewarding). Each trip is an opportunity to make memories, try new experiences, and watch your family grow together.
